• Abstract: The Chronique du règne de Charles IX was adapted for the Opéra-Comique (Le Pré-aux-Clercs, 1832) and the Opéra (Les Huguenots, 1836). Neither work succeeds in integrating the tension which exists in Mérimée’s tale between fascination with the horrors of history and distance from the conventional codes of the historical account.
