- Abstract: In his war writings from the First World War as well as the Second, Giraudoux is determined not to let the reader glimpse the reality of war. Turning his gaze towards nature, or towards minute details during the First World War, during the Second World War he leaves it to the gardener to speak. This silence, this averting of the gaze, should be understood more as a resistance to the horror, an anesthesia to circumvent suffering, than as indifference or levity.
