- Abstract: In 1941, Giraudoux published Littérature, which brought together a collection of conference papers, prefaces, and other discourses. His aim was to extol the greatness of French literature at a moment when France was confronting the tribulations of occupation. Most of the texts date from 1930–1931, and contain his ideas on the theatre at the time he began to write plays. He endorses a literary theatre where the French language is foregrounded and respected, and he reflects on the role of the director.
