- Abstract: The genre of jokes flourishes in Latin in the fifteenth century and in vernacular in the sixteenth century. At the crossroad of the medieval fables, novelle and Latin collections of « mottos », it is also strongly influenced by the rediscovery of Plautus’ comedies. This article aims to show how reading and interpreting the theatrical text fed this genre to create a hybrid literary form in Italian context: beffa. I would more likely talk about « stage in the jokes » than « jokes on the stage ».
