Abstract: The distinctive feature of Guillaume au cort nes appears in the Couronnement de Louis. This article shows how the etiological story was set in motion that transformed the cognomen into a Homeric epithet, and the inflections and issues that arose from it. Guillaume is a holy hero, who atoned for his immoderation with this symbolic wound, through which he acquired the wisdom and moderation that made him the knight exemplar par excellence.
