• Abstract: The article examines the theoretical discourses that underlie the ars historica of the Quattrocento and juxtaposes them with certain historical productions in order to measure the effects of a dual phenomenon: the integration of knowledge gained from translations of Greek historians on the one hand, and the increased rhetoricization of historical narration on the other. The contradictions inherent in a historiography lacking theoretical and academic legitimacy are thus revealed.
