  • Abstract: In De eodem et diverso, Adelard tells us that while at school in Tours he played the zither before a queen. Historians identify her as either Matilda of Scotland, queen of England, or Bertrade de Montfort, queen of France. Drawing on one of the monastic innovations that marked Gregorian Europe at the turn of the eleventh and twelfth centuries, it is possible to establish the queen’s identity, which clarifies the treatise’s chronology and explains why the author did not name her.
