- Abstract: Trevisa’s translation of the Polychronicon is prefaced by a dialogue between a clerk and his patron. It reflects the controversy about the politics of translating scientific and religious texts. At the time, there were major sociocultural mutations that complicated the presence of two vernaculars. The lord’s defense of translation is based on the prestige enjoyed by English before the Normans and on the history of translatio studii ; his arguments are often close to Wycliffites.
