- Abstract: The “champenoise” prose version of Barlaam et Josaphat (thirteenth century) contains ten embedded tales related to the narrative framework. The tales often depict characters who look like the protagonists of the main story. In some tales, though, the mises en abyme don’t concern the characters but the text himself and the practice of embedding. I will examine the narrative, rhetorical and reflexive bonds between embedding and embedded narratives in this version of Barlaam et Josaphat.
