• Abstract: The Theatre des Bons Engins, ­composed by Guillaume de La Perrière to the attention of Margarite de Navarre in 1535, is a singular work. A philosophical drama of human life, inspired by Stoicism, it echoes the intellectual, political and religious problems of the time : the rehabilitation of ­Seneca’s works by Calvin at the moment when the evangelism advocated by the sovereign of Navarre is defeated by the policy of Francis I.
