  • Abstract: This note focusses on the breadth of the French-speaking area with which Chaucer engaged. Chaucer’s friendly literary exchanges with contemporary French writers has received expert scrutiny, as well as Chaucer’s interest in “Flaundres, in Artoys, and Pycardie” – yet the unprompted interpolation of “Burgoyne” as one of the known world’s frontiers in his translation of the Romance of the Rose confirms that Chaucer was fascinated with the duchy’s growing empire, where picard was the lingua franca.
