- Abstract: The Byzantine occupation of Apulia and Basilicata (theme of Langobardia, then catepanate of Italy) lasted from the end of the 9th to the second half of the 11th century, in a period of economic growth. The imperial authorities tried to build a new urban network, in order to resettle inhabitants and to manage the province. They collected direct taxes in the centre of the theme in the 11th century. They supplied imperial coins, in particuliar to pay the salary of military and civil servants and the roga of dignitaries, thus trying to create a local aristocracy, but this flow ceased with imperial domination. The economic action of the Empire was therefore important, but somewhat transitory.
