- Abstract: This article is a discussion of examples in Italian vernacular grammars in the 16th century, with a particular focus on their educational perspective. The tradition of the Italian grammar whose rules were based on the authority of the “Three Crowns” originated in Fortunio’s Regole; in the Compendio, which was dedicated to a young man who must learn the language, Flaminio cuts down on examples; among the compendia and the grammars inspired by the Prose of Bembo, some are simple “riduzioni a metodo”, others are works more independent of their model, based on the principle that authors should be read “con giudicio” (with discernment); in Giambullari’s grammar we can also find exempla ficta; the canon would widen in the second half of the century. Grammarians based their rules on literary examples and, from teaching perspective, authors’ examples both constitute a means of learning and offer concrete models of writing.
