• Abstract: The originality of the religious movement of the mulieres religiosae from the thirteenth-century Southern Low Countries lies largely in a sociability born of unusual spiritual powers that were developed among these “young” people. An approach based on showing the intersection of gender and age allows us to gain a greater understanding of the role of these atypical devout women in society and in the Church, and their relationships with each other. The Vitae and the exempla devoted to these religiosae mulieres show that social hierarchies were ­constructed and ­continuously renegotiated depending on the individuals involved.
