  • Abstract: Postulating that the translator, who worked for the encyclopaedic and moral edification of the reading public, worked at the same time for his own salvation, we focus here on the methods of translation chosen by Jean de Vignay in the Miroir historial in order to transpose into French the discourse about God in the narrative of the Creation found in the Speculum historiale of Vincent de Beauvais. This study, which draws on linguistic, stylistic and pragmatic approaches, shows that, despite some deficiencies in his knowledge of both theology and Latin, Jean de Vignay’s translation is based on choices which bear witness to an obvious wish to increase the persuasive impact of the discourse about God and to change the direction of its underlying moral meaning toward a message of palpable austerity. The translator here thus plays an educational role and acts as a writer as well as a linguistic intermediary.
