- Abstract: The translation made by Jean de Vignay (c. 1330) of the Speculum historiale, the famous Latin encyclopaedia, has received scant attention from experts in scientific lexicography. This is partly due to the very title of the treatise, which suggests that it is an historical work, and partly to the fact that most of the text has never been published. This paper, which has been produced in parallel with the preparation of an edition of the Miroir historial, presents, on the one hand, a preliminary survey of the scientific vocabulary as used by Jean de Vignay as well as by the reviser who took up the translation around 1350 and, on the other hand, an attempt to identify the scientific sources of the work, Arab and Western alike.
