  • Abstract: In the following paper, the term phraseology refers to a series of non-uniform multi-word units identified on the basis of statistical and semantic criteria in a particular discourse situation. The aim of the paper is to analyze phraseological “extensions” of words used to describe the financial crisis. The study is based on two chronologically organized corpora of speeches delivered by mainstream French politicians. Our goal was to conduct a qualitative and quantitative analysis of certain commonly used phrases and word sequences—a “prescribed” set of phrases which point to a dominant position of a certain discourse, catchphrases and patterns used to discuss the economy today. We wanted to see if the results of the analysis confirm the hypothesis of a threshold change taking place in public discourse.
