- Abstract: The article examines synonymy within a specialized subsystem of professional French on the basis of analysis of the denotation and value of linguistic units in French and also from a contrastive view. Synonymy as a manifestation of asymmetric dualism of linguistic units is reflected in the relation of similarity (equivalence) of meanings, which allows their substitutability in certain contexts and constructions. The semantic potential of linguistic units is created by denotation, which can be enriched by connotations with various supplementary information (functional styles or socio-professional, geographical, sociolinguistic registers) and other stylistic nuances (expressiveness, affectivity), not only in terms of synchrony but also in terms of diachrony. The article analyzes the different types of semantic and stylistic equivalence in the terminology of current economic professional French, taken in the broad sense of the word (simple and compound designate units, lexicalized constructions, metaphors) from both intralingual and interlingual views and points out the problems associated with the popularisation of professional terms.
