  • Abstract: Electronic dictionaries and grammars have led to the situation where work on the lexicon, morphology and syntax no longer makes up clearly distinct disciplines. This article chronicles the history of the research methods that, over the last quarter of the twentieth century, brought about this interdisciplinary revolution. The importance of lexicography, elevated — from Pierre Larousse to Maurice Gross — to the rank of experimental lexicology in contemporary linguistics cannot be overestimated. This new scientific ambition, widely acknowledged today, derives directly from the nineteenth century, the ‛century of dictionaries’. It cannot be dissociated from IT tools, originally launched by the LADL, a pioneer in the field thanks to the invention of lexicon-grammars.
