- Abstract: The relationship between language and culture has long been a major claim of linguistics. Such connection particularly shows in the lexicon. Words do not only convey denotational meaning but also cultural information. Culturally-marked lexis is associated with cultural domains, which are in turn connected with cultural scripts that contain information about the event itself, the participants and the place where it takes place. In the present article we illustrate cultural scripts from the French domain of cooking. The analysis shows the lexical wealth of the domain, highlighted by the figurative sense of many French food words that generates a remarkable number of idioms with a positive or negative connotation. The study of the food idiomatic expressions in the French language is undertaken from a semantic and a syntactic perspective.
