- Abstract: This article builds on the work relating to the creation and lexicographic exploitation of the system of French semantic labels conducted for over fifteen years in the context of Explanatory Combinatorial Lexicography. It offers a theoretical step back on the notion, now that it has been intensively exploited; at the same time, it updates the latest detailed presentation (made in 2003). Following a few preliminary considerations on the problem of classifying lexical units, we offer a characterization of the notion of semantic label. We then examine the global structure of the system of French semantic labels, and conclude by returning to the origins of the notion so as to better clarify its scope and potential applications.
