  • Abstract: Which features are to be used to classify French adjectives? We propose about thirty syntactic-semantic features which, when applied to the French adjectives which play the role of the predicate of a copulative sentence, produce about forty classes. What is the point of a taxonomy of adjectives? It meets two requirements. On the one hand, such work helps to organize our knowledge of lexical entries of adjectives, and reflects a possible attitude found in many natural and physical sciences. On the other hand, since the classification is based not only on semantic but also on formal or syntactic features, it helps to describe the lexical entries in a such a way that the results can be used in language processing. The article surveys several examples of features, and then presents the class of symmetrical adjectives.
