- Abstract: Spelling is not embodied in dictionaries. A comparison of dictionaries suffices to reveal that each one gives alternatives and varying written forms. In three current French dictionaries, which are published annually in a dated edition, Petit Larousse, Petit Robert, and Dictionnaire Hachette, differences can be noted in the way spelling variation is indicated and in certain areas of the lexicon where spelling is not stabilised : acronyms, trade marks, joining or separating elements of compounds, etc.
