- Abstract: The annotated copy of Soulier de satin sent by Paul Claudel to Jean-Louis Barrault in October 1942 shows the particular attention accorded by the writer to diction in his play. Analysis of the copy and its comparison with the sound recording of the performance in 1944 allow us to observe the modernity of claudélienne diction in the théâtre français, the poet’s efforts to reconcile the demands of the lyric with the requirements of the scene, and the ability of the playwright to inspire the actors’ performances.
