- Abstract: The titles of Book III of the Essais record the “fantasie” that gave rise to each chapter, even if the text, often lengthened, sometimes exceeds the original project. The reiteration of the words of the title in the text itself makes it possible to glimpse what may have been the first editorial draft of each of these “galops d’essai”, or even “la mouche” “de rencontre” that served them as argument. This attention to the “commencements” should not, however, make us forget the revisions which result of them.
