• Abstract: Montaigne is well known to comment about his own conception and his particular use of language in the Essais. In a similar way, some sentences, some fragments of the text are written in a way which seems to reveal and express Montaigne’s thought. This paper will focus on Montaigne’s use of comparison, principally as syntactical structure, but also as stylistic device. comparison, indeed, can be regarded as a sort of intellectual instrument, which embodies in the text the skeptical movement.
