- Abstract: Montaigne’s Essais can be read as a political discourse combined with a self-portrait. It is usually interpreted in two contradictory ways: on the one hand, as the true expression of Montaigne’s real political practices; on the other hand, a philosophical approach elevates it to the status of a systematized doctrine. Such a political and personal discourse is displayed in an autonomous literary dimension; it aims to imagine a noble frankness, an ideological answer to the threats of civil wars and king’s despotism.
