- Abstract: Against passions, the stoics prescribe meditatio mortis. Montaigne refuses this conduct « according to reason », which produces perturbatio, and claims for one « according to sensation », which leads us (through the search of pleasure and avoidance of pain) to tranquilitas. His model is Socrates, which attacks dogmatic ideas about man and establishes self-knowledge on sensitive perception. The result is the mutual correction of body and soul or self-regulation.
