- Abstract: This paper aims to identify the specificity of Montaigne’s approach to the New World’s natives, and to discuss the scope of the essayist’s moral relativism. For this purpose this article resumes a set of writings of Lévi-Strauss about Jean de Léry and the chapter "Rereading Montaigne". This paper claims that the essayist’s skepticism is compatible with the exercise of moral judgement, and that it leads to a kind of universalism, that could be described as broadening the limits of humanity.
