• Abstract: Attached to the skeptism, the critical bias of the Essays has been emphasized by the twentieth century commentary, establishing a distance from the Humanism’s discursive practices, based on imitation and authority. By contrast, this article discusses aspects in the work of Montaigne that belong to the domain of rhetoric. In our view, the concern of the essayist to present, in his portrait, a reliable character requires an appropriate and contextualized use of the persuasive resources.
