• Abstract: The comparison between the barbarian described by Tacitus in his Germany and barbarian painted in the Essays shows two very different conditions of men. The first is a negative condition that must be surmounted and the second is almost a human ideal. If we consider the critics made by him about religion or Christians, we will find a sketch of man’s image which Montaigne’s scepticism doesn’t allow him to establish.
