- Abstract: During a dinner in Rome, Montaigne takes part in a discussion during which the guests examine the French translation of Plutarch. This passage of his Travel Journal is absolutely remarkable, since, while Montaigne shows great admiration for Amyot, it catches out the latter’s translation on points which precisely create the exceptional quality of the text. The way Montaigne tackles the notion of error in Amyot’s text is a philological experience through which the essayist’s poetics are defined.
