• Abstract: The commitment of Montaigne to Catholicism is often expressed in a very visible manner, but it also happens that his religious beliefs come through in an unexpected way. In the chapter that appears purely playful, “Of vain subtleties”, Montaigne denounces the error of opinions almost in passing. The paraphrase designates those who question traditional religion, that is the Protestants, and aims here at the Reformation, as heresy.
