- Abstract: This article highlights the sources and core characteristics of Montaigne's notion of presumption. Montaigne is always rereading and rewriting the Essais with the ironic consciousness of this vice as a universal error, especially after 1588. Irony also enables Montaigne to accept this facet of himself which, in a view more ethical that moral, he renames vanity.
