Abstract: It is unusual to find analyses of the role of music in the Essais since it is rarely evoked or thematised by Montaigne, except in classical metaphoric terms (“harmony”, “rhapsody”). Irène Salas’ article illuminates the ambivalence felt by Montaigne for this art, its “charm”, and the compositional resources it offers in relation to writing.
