Abstract: Tournaments remain an under-researched subject, especially where the place they occupy in the imagination is concerned. Military weapons and games are essential for the understanding of medieval fiction and of the warmongering society that produced it–a society that tended by various means to aestheticize, play down and domesticate its own violence.
