• Abstract: To reconstitute the reasons which led Proust to conceive of the idea of the dual personality of the artist, we have several resources at our disposition: correspondence, readings about Sainte-Beuve around 1904 on the occasion of the centenary of his birth, the broadsheet press, and meditations on some of the philosophical readings which ultimately determined the novelistic mise-en-scène of the thesis. These documents contain a range of possible significations.
