- Abstract: The difference of opinion which turned Vigny and Sainte-Beuve against each other is well known. But is it enough to the make the author of Stello a precursor to the critical thought of Proust? Their shared rejection of “Sainte-Beuve’s method” illuminates what separates Vigny and Proust, and also what unites them. Faced with criticism, both search for a lost poetry which they find beyond the moving boundaries of the creator self, and beyond time.
