Abstract: While the sublime in Czech representations of the Nativity has scarcely received any attention, given the predominance of the pastoral theme which was traditionally seen as the antithesis of the sublime, this article studies the genre of the pastoral in its cultural and devotional context, in order to elucidate its proximity to the sublime, which in turn makes it a powerful instrument of conversion.
