Abstract: The Chandos Anthems are analysed here as examples of sacred music in which words are a source of the sublime as much as music. Beginning with a reflection on prayer in the Anglican Church, the author examines the theory of John Dennis on the religious sublime so as to better understand Handel’s motivations, making of his anthems a sublime poetic prayer.
